Sydney Alliance Takes on Housing and Energy Before March Assembly

In the past week, nearly 200 people from Western and South West Sydney took part in a series of pre-Assembly gatherings in Revesby, Parramatta, and Milperra, uniting around shared concerns about the cost of living and climate justice. Organised by IAF Pacific affiliate Sydney Alliance, these events served as a critical step in mobilising communities ahead of the upcoming Federal Pre-Election Assembly on March 13.

Across all events, participants engaged in conversations about the economic and environmental pressures facing their communities, particularly rising energy costs, housing insecurity, and wage stagnation. Over shared meals and cultural exchange, faith leaders, union members, and community organisations strengthened relationships and took concrete steps toward action.

A key focus was the postcard-writing campaign, where attendees sent messages to Federal MPs and election candidates, urging them to commit to meaningful solutions. By amplifying local voices and engaging decision-makers directly, these gatherings were not just about discussion—they were about shifting power.

The Parramatta Community Dinner and the Revesby Pre-Assembly BBQ and Workshop demonstrated the strength of Sydney Alliance’s broad-based coalition. Both events featured a national delegation of organisers, providing an opportunity for cross-community learning and collaboration. Local leaders spoke about the impact of grassroots organising and the importance of bringing people together to influence public policy.

With only weeks until the Federal Pre-Election Assembly on 13 March, the Sydney Alliance is intensifying efforts to hold political leaders accountable. These pre-Assembly actions have set the stage for what comes next: a united call for real commitments on housing and energy justice.

IAF Pacific recognises the leadership of Sydney Alliance in bringing communities together across Sydney. Through its work with more than 40 partner organisations and friends, Sydney Alliance continues to build power at the grassroots level, ensuring that policy decisions reflect the needs of the people, not just the interests of the powerful. The momentum created in the past week will carry through to the Assembly and beyond, reinforcing that organised communities can drive lasting change.
