Upcoming National & Regional Training
The National and Regional Training sessions are an intensive 5-day program for people committed to understanding the craft, theory and practices of community organising; power, leadership, interest, relationships and organisation.
Leadership: Not only will attendees learn about community organising, but engage in self-reflection on their own leadership, tendencies in public life and role in their organisations.
Rebuilding and strengthening organisations: The training provides tools for organisational leaders and members to address the challenges and decline of civil society and the impact that has on modern organisations.
Community of leaders: This training will be particularly important as it builds a new cohort of leaders across Alberta and British Columbia in a time when civic engagement is challenged on many fronts.
It is for those who want to play a key role in leading the activities of the Alliance inside their organisation and acting as a bridge between civil society organisations.
The training draws on 80 years of experience in delivering training in Canada, US, UK, NZ-Aotearoa, and Australia. The training team brings together over 60 years of experience in community organising from Canada, the US and Australia-Aotearoa New Zealand.
POWER
Its nature, use, abuse, how it is used to advance values and the common good. Confronting our baggage about power. Negotiation. Relational power.
Self Interest
Our foundation; what sets us apart from market & bureaucratic cultures.
The theory and practice of relational organising, strengths and limitations, public-private, relational leadership and the the practice of relational meetings.
Organisations
Critical to the future of democracy, the middle class and working families.
The necessity of vital, revitalised, or new and effective institutions in the power arena. Recognising strong and thriving institutions and building effective relational organisations that reach their mission.
Leadership
The development of relational leadership capacity to change institutions & communities and the world. Made, not born, hone and explore qualities, breadth and boundaries in building public and collective power.
Who should attend?
Leaders from community, environmental, faith, union, health, voluntary, social services and people of the common good. We encourage participants to have attended introductory or foundations training with their local alliance before the residential. We believe leaders are made not born. When we say leader, we are talking about you!

Leaders passionate about their own organisations
Do you want your organisation to be stronger, broader and more engaged?
So often organisational development and leadership training misses core concepts that are critical for mission-based and/or voluntary membership-based organisations.
The training provides tools for organisations that want to change the world while building their membership, deepening leadership, planning succession and focusing on mission.

Cohorts who want to change the world, together
Do you want to change the landscape of power in your city or region?
In a world that divides and distracts, community organising provides a focus point for those that wish to unite, relate and act for the common good.
Consider participating in the training as a cohort of diverse peers.
Training together; learning, evaluating concepts old and new; building and deepening relationships. These are multiplication effects for a cohort coming together.

Leaders who want to leave a legacy
If not you, who? If not now, when?
Negotiation, relationality, power-with, self-interest (properly understood) and organisation are fundamental concepts for changing the world and leaving a legacy, too often neglected in corporate 'leadership training' run by consultants.
Instead, the training with its combined approaches of personal reflection, Socratic method, relationship, explanation and agitation provides a stimulating week for leaders at pivot points in their journey; whether in the early, mid or later years of their vocation.

Research-Action Teams, Boards & Alliance groups
Need to restart or grow the energy in your research-action team?
With common tools and concepts and the ‘big picture’, research-action teams that send their groups through training together gain massive traction and ability to act.
Not only focusing on a detailed walk-through of the organising cycle, but building up relational, power analysis skills and seeing how issues fit within the broader mission of the Alliance.

Potential new organisers & invested leaders
Is broad based organising your passion?
Are you leading a major action of your alliance or are you curious about if and how broad-base organising might be part of your future? The national training is a milestone and turning point for many who want to practice the art of community organising. We encourage leaders and staff to attend multiple times. Each training is different, the wisdom of each training room and the diversity of trainers provide unique perspectives on current challenges, campaigns and efforts.
