Avondale Speaks: Community Demands a Seat at the Table for Racecourse Whenua!

Updated: Feb 27

The future of the Avondale Racecourse whenua belongs to the people—not corporate lobbyists behind closed doors. Today, the people of Avondale made that clear in a powerful action at Auckland Council’s planning committee, demanding that decisions about this vital community space be made with, not for, the community.

A Strong and United Voice

Standing together, representatives from I Love Avondale, Whau Pasifika, Maritime Union NZ, and the Avondale Business Association stepped up to speak truth to power. Jaclyn, Ina, Carl, and Cynthia delivered incredible kōrero, representing the voices of residents, workers, and businesses who depend on the racecourse for sports, recreation, markets, and community events.

And the message? Loud and clear: The community must have a seat at the table. A working group must be formed to ensure the people of Avondale shape the future of the whenua. No decisions should be made until the community has been properly consulted.

People Power on Full Display

Backed by Te Ohu Tāmaki and representatives from across Auckland’s civil society, 54 people showed up—making this the biggest delegation to Council this term! That’s not just a statement—that’s a movement.

The Fight Is Just Beginning

Today was a powerful step, but we’re not done yet. We won’t let Avondale’s future be sold off without the voices of those who live, work, and play here. Now, we keep the pressure on. Now, we organize.

Shout out to the Avondale community for showing what people power looks like!
