Building Relationships, Learning Truths: GVAT’s Commitment to Truth & Reconciliation

Updated: Feb 27

At Greater Victoria Acting Together (GVAT), we know that real change starts with deep listening, meaningful relationships, and community-driven action. That’s why we are so proud of the work our leaders are doing to engage in truth and reconciliation—not just in words, but in action.

One of the powerful ways our members have been learning and building relationships is through the Victoria Native Friendship Centre’s (VNFC) Community Learning Program (CLP). This immersive experience brings together people from all backgrounds to learn about the true history of colonization, the strengths and resilience of Indigenous communities, and how to engage in reconciliation with respect and accountability.

A Commitment to Learning and Action

Through GVAT’s Indigenous Relationships Learning Circle, our members have taken part in initiatives like:

  • Hands-on reconciliation work—such as decolonizing the land by removing invasive species and replanting native ones alongside First Nations partners.

  • Education and relationship-building—learning directly from Elders and Knowledge Keepers through programs like CLP.

  • Strengthening our role as allies—understanding how to engage in Indigenous-led initiatives in a way that is truly supportive and community-driven.

At the heart of this work is a simple but profound truth: reconciliation is an ongoing journey, not a single action. GVAT leaders are committed to walking this path with integrity, humility, and a willingness to keep learning.

Looking Ahead

As GVAT continues its work in community organizing, we remain dedicated to ensuring Indigenous voices and leadership are central to the change we seek. Our partnerships—whether through learning programs like CLP, advocacy efforts, or direct action—help shape the work we do across issues like housing, economic justice, and climate resilience.

The reflections of our members remind us that change happens through everyday moments of learning, relationship-building, and action. As we move into 2025, we invite our broader community to join us in this work—to listen, to engage, and to stand in solidarity.
